The early weeks are hard.
You should not navigate them alone.

The first days and weeks after birth are among the most intense of any parent's life. You are healing from birth, running on fragmented sleep, figuring out feeding, trying to understand what this tiny new person needs, and wondering if everything you are feeling is normal — all at once.

A postpartum doula provides in-home support that helps you rest, recover, and gain confidence during this period. Not judgment. Not unsolicited opinions. Not another person you have to perform wellness for. A trained, experienced professional who comes to your home to support your family — on your terms.

Postpartum doula support has been shown to reduce rates of postpartum depression, increase breastfeeding duration, improve maternal confidence, and help the whole family adjust more smoothly to the demands of new parenthood. And through SoCal Doulas, it is now accessible to most Southern California families through insurance.

Frequently asked questions

What does a postpartum doula do differently from a night nurse?

A postpartum doula's role is broader than a night nurse's. While a night nurse primarily focuses on the baby so parents can sleep, a postpartum doula supports the whole family — including the birthing parent's physical and emotional recovery, feeding support, partner and sibling adjustment, and teaching skills that help parents feel more confident with their baby. Many postpartum doulas also offer overnight visits if that is what a family needs.

When do I start postpartum doula support?

Ideally, you connect with your doula before your baby arrives. Many families begin postpartum doula visits within the first days after birth — the earlier, the better for recovery, feeding establishment, and preventing challenges from compounding. However, it is never too late to bring in support, and doulas can begin working with families weeks or months postpartum.

Does a postpartum doula cook meals?

Yes — light meal and snack preparation is a common part of postpartum doula support. This might mean warming a meal someone else brought, preparing a nutritious lunch or snack, or helping with simple cooking. It is not a full personal chef service, but nourishing the postpartum parent is absolutely part of the role.

How long does postpartum doula support typically continue?

This varies by family. Some families access a few visits in the first two weeks; others receive several weeks of support. The Medi-Cal doula benefit covers a set number of visits — we will review exactly what your plan covers during your benefits verification call. Additional visits beyond insurance coverage can often be arranged at a private-pay rate.

Is postpartum doula support covered by Medi-Cal?

Yes. Medi-Cal covers postpartum doula services as a perinatal benefit. See our insurance-covered doulas page for complete details on how the benefit works and how to access it through SoCal Doulas.
