Your birth doula is there
for every moment.

Labor is unpredictable. It is intense. It is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding experiences of your life — and it is made measurably better when you have a trained, calm, experienced person beside you who is there for you and only you, from the first contraction through your baby's first breath.

A birth doula is not a medical provider. They do not deliver your baby or make clinical decisions. What they do is fill the enormous gap that medical care often leaves — the continuous human presence, the physical comfort, the reassurance, the advocacy, the memory of what you said you wanted when you can no longer remember.

Studies consistently show that continuous doula support leads to shorter labors, fewer cesareans, less pain medication, and greater birth satisfaction. No drug, no intervention, no piece of equipment produces outcomes this consistently positive across every type of birth setting.

"Continuous labor support is one of the most effective interventions available for improving birth outcomes — and now it is covered by insurance."

The role of your doula
during labor and birth

A birth doula supports the whole person — physically, emotionally, and informationally — from first contraction through the immediate postpartum period.

Physical Comfort

Massage, counter-pressure, heat and cold application, hydrotherapy guidance, positioning for labor progress and comfort, and hands-on support through every contraction.

Emotional Support

Calm, grounding presence through the intensity of labor. Reassurance when you doubt yourself. Encouragement when you feel like you cannot go on. Unwavering belief in your strength.

Birth Advocacy

Helping you communicate your wishes to your care team. Asking questions on your behalf. Ensuring you feel informed before consenting to any procedure or intervention.

Partner Support

Guiding your partner on how to support you. Giving them a role and purpose. Making sure they are cared for too — so they can show up fully for you throughout your labor.

Information & Education

Explaining what is happening during your labor. Translating medical information into plain language. Helping you understand your options at every stage without directing your decisions.

Immediate Postpartum

Staying with you through the first critical hours after birth. Supporting initial breastfeeding. Helping with skin-to-skin. Ensuring your immediate needs are met before leaving.

What to expect from
prenatal to postpartum

Before Birth

Prenatal Visits

One to two in-depth prenatal visits to discuss your birth goals, create your birth preferences document, review your birth setting, answer questions, and build the relationship that makes labor support effective.

As Labor Begins

On-Call & Early Labor Support

Your doula is on call from 37 to 38 weeks. When labor starts, they are available by phone and text to help you assess where you are, when to go to the hospital or birth center, and how to manage early labor at home.

Active Labor

In-Person Labor Support

Your doula arrives when you need them — typically in active labor or when you leave for your birth setting. They stay with you continuously through the remainder of your labor, through birth, and into the immediate postpartum period.

Birth & Immediately After

Delivery & First Hours

Continuous support through delivery, initial breastfeeding support, skin-to-skin encouragement, and ensuring your immediate postpartum needs are met. Your doula typically stays one to two hours after birth.

After Birth

Postpartum Follow-Up

A postpartum visit in the days or weeks following birth to debrief your experience, answer questions, support feeding, and connect you to additional resources if needed.

Frequently asked questions

What does a birth doula actually do?

A birth doula provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support during labor and birth. This includes physical comfort measures (massage, counter-pressure, positioning), emotional encouragement and reassurance, help communicating with your care team, and support for your partner. A doula is not a medical provider and does not deliver your baby or make clinical decisions — they support you through the experience.

Can I have a doula with an epidural?

Absolutely. Doula support is valuable regardless of your pain management choices. Many families with epidurals find doula support just as valuable — for positioning, comfort in early labor before the epidural, emotional support, communication with the care team, and the immediate postpartum period. Your doula supports your choices, not a particular birth philosophy.

Can I have a doula at a hospital birth?

Yes. Doulas work in all birth settings — hospitals, birth centers, and home births. Hospital policies vary, but most allow one to two support people in the labor room, and a doula can be included in that number. We work with families delivering at hospitals throughout Southern California.

What if my birth happens very quickly?

Your doula is on call from 37 to 38 weeks. If labor moves quickly, they will do everything possible to reach you. For particularly fast labors, they may arrive after birth and provide immediate postpartum support. We discuss rapid labor contingency plans during prenatal visits so you always know the plan if things move faster than expected.

How do I get matched with a doula?

We begin with a needs assessment to understand your birth goals, preferences, and personality. Based on that, we match you with a doula from our SoCal Doulas network whose experience, approach, and availability align with your needs. We then arrange an interview so you can meet before committing. Your comfort with your doula matters more than anything else.

Is birth doula support covered by Medi-Cal?

Yes. Medi-Cal now covers birth doula services as a recognized perinatal benefit in California. See our insurance-covered doulas page for full details on how the benefit works, what is covered, and how to access it through SoCal Doulas.
