What the Medi-Cal doula benefit
means for California families

In 2023, California made history by becoming one of the first states in the nation to cover doula services as a Medi-Cal benefit — making professional birth and postpartum doula support available to Medi-Cal members at no cost. This is one of the most significant expansions of birth equity in California history.

The Medi-Cal doula benefit covers both birth doulas and postpartum doulas, including prenatal visits, continuous labor support, and postpartum follow-up. Many commercial insurance plans have followed suit and now cover doula services as well.

For the first time, families who have historically been most underserved by our birth system have access to the same quality of continuous birth support that has been available only to those who could pay out of pocket. SoCal Doulas exists specifically to make this benefit accessible — handling all credentialing, billing, and claims so families can focus entirely on their birth and their baby.

From verification to your doula —
a simple process

01

Verify Your Benefits

Contact us or complete our online form. We check your insurance to confirm doula coverage and explain exactly what your plan includes — before you commit to anything.

02

Get Matched

We match you with a credentialed doula from our SoCal Doulas network based on your birth goals, location, and availability — then arrange an interview so you can meet first.

03

Receive Care

Your doula provides all contracted services — prenatal visits, labor support, and postpartum follow-up. You focus on birth. We handle the paperwork.

04

We Bill Your Insurance

SoCal Doulas submits all claims to your insurance on your behalf. Most families pay nothing. If there is any cost-sharing, we notify you before services begin.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my insurance covers a doula?

The easiest way is to contact us — we verify doula benefits as part of our intake process at no cost to you. You can also call your insurance directly and ask whether doula services are covered as a maternity or birth benefit. If you have Medi-Cal through any California managed care plan, you are very likely covered.

Do I have to do any of the insurance paperwork?

No. SoCal Doulas handles all credentialing, authorization requests, claim submissions, and billing on your behalf. Your only responsibility is to provide your insurance information when you connect with us. We do the rest.

What if my insurance denies coverage?

If a claim is denied, we work to appeal on your behalf. We will also communicate any potential out-of-pocket costs to you before services begin — never after — so there are no surprises. For families whose insurance does not cover doula services, we can discuss private-pay options.

Is the doula quality different because insurance is paying?

No. All SoCal Doulas network members are credentialed, trained professionals who meet our standards for inclusion in the network regardless of payment source. The quality of care, the professionalism of the relationship, and the commitment to your birth experience are identical whether you are a Medi-Cal member or a privately insured family.

Can I choose my own doula?

We match you with doulas from our credentialed network based on your goals and availability, then facilitate an interview before any commitment. In some cases, if you already have a doula you love who is not in our network, we can explore options for bringing them on as a network provider. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
