Cesarean families deserve
the same quality of support.

One in three babies in the United States is born by cesarean section. Yet the cultural conversation around birth support — doulas, continuous labor companions, birth preferences — is almost exclusively framed around vaginal birth. Cesarean families are often left to navigate a major abdominal surgery with far less preparation, far less continuous support, and far more isolation than their experience deserves.

Whether your cesarean is planned weeks in advance or decided in the final hours of labor, you deserve a knowledgeable, compassionate person beside you — in the preparation room, wherever hospital policy allows, and through the immediate postpartum hours. A cesarean is not a birth that does not require support. It is a birth that requires different support.

Our cesarean birth doulas are trained in the unique emotional, physical, and logistical landscape of cesarean birth — and they are committed to helping you have the most positive, informed, empowered cesarean experience possible, whatever the circumstances of your surgery.

How a cesarean doula supports
your birth experience

Support looks different for cesarean families — and a good cesarean doula knows exactly how to show up for it.

Pre-Surgical Preparation

Understanding what will happen during your cesarean, what to expect in the operating room, what you can request, and how to prepare physically and emotionally for the experience ahead.

Cesarean Birth Preferences

Creating a cesarean birth plan — including skin-to-skin, delayed cord clamping, lowered drape for the birth, gentle cesarean options, music preferences, and photography — and communicating those preferences to your surgical team.

Operating Room Support

Where hospital policy permits a doula in the operating room, your cesarean doula can be present alongside your partner — providing calm, grounding support through the surgical experience and your baby's arrival.

Immediate Recovery Support

The surgical recovery area is often where the most intense emotional processing happens. Your doula provides continuous support through recovery, helping with early skin-to-skin and breastfeeding where possible.

Unplanned Cesarean Support

Unplanned cesareans are often preceded by hours of labor and accompanied by fear, disappointment, and urgency. If your birth path changes unexpectedly, your doula stays with you through the transition and into surgery.

Emotional Processing

Many cesarean families experience grief, trauma, or complex feelings about their birth. Your doula provides nonjudgmental space for all of it — before and after birth — and connects you to additional support when needed.

Babies in the US are born by cesarean — yet cesarean families often receive far less birth support

Frequently asked questions

Can a doula actually be in the operating room?

It depends on the hospital's policy. Many hospitals allow one support person in the OR — typically a partner or family member — and some allow a doula in addition to or instead of. Your doula will communicate with your birth facility before your scheduled cesarean to understand their specific policy and advocate for their presence where possible. If the doula cannot be in the OR, they will be immediately outside and meet you in recovery.

What is a gentle cesarean?

A gentle (or family-centered) cesarean is a surgical approach that incorporates elements designed to make the cesarean experience more similar to vaginal birth — including a lowered or clear drape so parents can see their baby emerge, delayed cord clamping, immediate skin-to-skin in the OR, and having the baby announced by the delivering provider rather than a nurse. Your doula can help you request these accommodations and create a birth preferences document to share with your surgical team.

What if my planned vaginal birth becomes a cesarean?

Your doula stays with you throughout the entire transition. If you have been laboring with doula support and your birth path changes to cesarean, your doula continues to provide emotional support, helps communicate your preferences to the team, and stays with you through recovery. This continuity of support during an already difficult and often frightening transition is one of the most valuable things a doula provides.

Is cesarean birth doula support covered by insurance?

Yes. Medi-Cal covers doula services for all birth types including cesarean. Many commercial insurance plans also cover cesarean birth doulas. See our insurance-covered doulas page for complete details.
