The Cochrane Collaboration's systematic review of continuous labor support — the gold standard of medical evidence — found that women who received continuous support during labor were more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth, less likely to have a cesarean, less likely to use pain medication, more likely to be satisfied with their birth experience, and had shorter labors. No medical intervention produces outcomes this consistently positive across all categories.

Medi-Cal now covers doula services as a birth benefit — a historic expansion of access that means California families with Medi-Cal can receive professional doula support at no cost. Many commercial insurance plans have also begun covering doula care.
Through SoCal Doulas, our insurance-billing doula collective, we handle the credentialing, billing, and claims process so families can focus on birth and recovery — not paperwork. Most families who qualify pay nothing out of pocket.
